The mission of the Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust is to preserve and protect land surrounding the Appalachian Trail in Maine for public benefit.
Preserving a narrow corridor and building a continuous footpath have been the goals that have defined the A.T. since 1925. But, many trail advocates over the years have imagined something more.
Benton MacKaye, who first proposed the idea for an Appalachian footpath, wrote “a realm and not merely a trail marks the full aim of our efforts.”
